“Yorubas started and own Nollywood”- Actress Aisha Lawal

Nollywood Actress , Aisha Lawal has claimed that Yoruba’s own Nollywood because they started it .

The filmmaker disclosed this during an interview with Nigerian Tribune where she addressed critics who believe that the Yoruba segment of Nollywood is inferior compared to other segments that make up Nollywood.

She urged people to make research and delve into the history of Nollywood to gain more knowledge on its emergence .

According to her , “We own the industry. Go back to research. The industry belongs to the Yoruba people. If you go back to research, you will hear from people like Hubert Ogunde and Ade Love.

if you go and research very well, you will discover that Yorubas own this industry, we started this industry”.

She noted that although they have made mistakes on their part , it doesn’t dispute their status as the origin of Nollywood and they have no business playing ‘catch up’ along side other Nollywood Sectors . She said,

We messed up at some point, but we are not playing catch-up. We are there already. Now, everybody wants to shoot a Yoruba movie.”
