Veteran Nollywood star Cynthia Okereke’s death came as a shock to many as the cause of her untimely demise was a mystery, something her husband has now revealed.
Okereke’s passing was announced on July 11, almost a year after her abduction by gunmen while she was on location filming a movie in Enugu.
Okechukwu Okereke, speaking on his wife’s death, revealed that he was the only one planning her funeral with the help of his son.
He stated that he was in need of assistance while confirming that his wife died as a result of the shock she sustained following her kidnap experience last year.
According to him, since she was abducted and released, the Nollywood actress had been in and out of the hospital up till she breathed her last.
When she was released from the kidnappers’ den, she had severe pain and we rushed her to the orthopedic hospital, where it was discovered that the pain relief drugs she took had affected her tummy.
From there, we rushed her again to a private hospital, where she underwent the first surgery and waited for the second one to be carried out on her before her doctors discovered that it had affected her heart.
At that point, we moved her to a specialist hospital in Owerri, where she was placed on life support. And on Tuesday, July 11, she gave up the ghost, after she spent about four months at the University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital Enugu.
Mr Okereke appealed to his late spouse’s friends, colleagues and fans to rally around his family to give the late actress a befitting burial.
He also disclosed that the ransom payment of N3.4 million to get his wife back when she was abducted was borrowed and is still being serviced.
He further claimed that the affected families of those abducted alongside his wife were not given the funds raised by the Actors Guild of Nigeria (AGN) to date, something that was confirmed by a source from actor Agbogidi’s family, who was among those taken.
Responding to the allegation, a source from the Actors Guild of Nigeria, AGN, Enugu State chapter refuted the claim, saying the families got the money.
You can believe whatever he tells you but the truth is that the money was handed over to him, in our office. He’s a big liar if he denies that he didn’t collect the money, the individual stated.
