Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has prohibited street trading within Abuja, saying that street traders, including corn sellers, contribute to insecurity and criminal occurrences in the nation’s capital.
The former governor of Rivers State gave the directive while addressing the leadership team of the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) and Federal Capital Development Authority (FCDA).
He disclosed that his intention is to restore Abuja to its glory and make it a state with better living conditions.
“The important thing we must do is to ensure that Abuja is back to what it ought to be. I moved around Abuja and found out there is total darkness in most of the places. What we need to do is to ensure light comes back as soon as possible” he said.
The minister further stated that his administration will adhere strictly to sanitation and that motor parks would be properly managed in order to enforce orderliness in the state.
He revealed that his decision to ban street selling is one that was made out of his longing for a clean environment saying that street trading contributes to untidiness in the state .
“If you are in charge of sanitation, we will call you at any time of the day. We shouldn’t allow motor parks all over the place, something must be done as soon as possible. If you cannot meet up my standard, say it now so that we can change you.
Street trading is prohibited. People selling corn will drop their waste indiscriminately and these are the things that cause insecurity“.
He also noted that street trading has led to an increase in crime rate and has become an avenue to gather vital information and relay these information to criminals.
“Criminals come to buy and use the opportunity to spy and give information to criminals. It is imperative we clear street hawkers” the minister said.
