Alison-Madueke: Ex-Petroleum Minister Charged With Bribery By UK Police

Former Nigerian oil minister Diezani Alison-Madueke has been charged to court on allegations of bribery and corruption . This was made known today by the British Police who stated that the former minister had taken payments in exchange for approving multi-million-pound oil and gas contracts.

The accused who was a significant member of former President Goodluck Jonathan’s cabinet, serving as petroleum minister from 2010 to 2015 and also the president of the Organisation of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) is said to have squandered government funds for personal use.

Head of the National Crime Agency’s (NCA) International Corruption Unit, Andy Kelly said that Diezani Alison-Madueke abused her position in Nigeria by accepting rewards for awarding multi-million-pound contracts. 

These charges according to the NCA boss , depicts corruption and has shed more light on what has been a lengthy and complex international investigation.

NCA revealed that the charges against her include specific monetary rewards such as furnishings, restoration work and personnel for the residences, payment of private school tuition, and presents from high-end designer shops such as Cartier jewels and Louis Vuitton products.

Although the former minister has denied these allegations , she is set to appear at West-minister Magistrates Court on October 2, 2023.
